The Beaked Hazelnut is our most northern nut. Our forests are just filled with them and they often feed much wildlife. Smaller in size compared to our commercial  bought hazelnuts, the Beaked Hazel still makes a satisfying snack. The nut meat is rich and delicious in flavour. It's narrow branching shape and relatively low height make it a good candidate to be grown in small spaces or yards. The husks start to turn brown around middle to late August most years and this is when you want to start to pick them. By September they are usually far and few between. This is by far our hardiest hazelnut that we can grow.

Growers Note: Hazelnuts need to be harvested before the squirrels get to them, try checking already by mid August and harvest hazels when husks start to turn brown. Alternatively installing a metal fence around the bush will keep your nut stash safe as well.
